SAFE IN INDIA
Safe-in-India (SII), a section 8 company, promoted and supported by the 1991 batch of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA91) is currently focussing on providing proper health-care and insurance claims from ESI. Our experiences from this work will be used to influence the car and two-wheeler brands to improve safety in their supply chain, reducing such accidents, and saving thousands of workers and their families from resulting hopelessness and poverty.
Thousands of factory workers lose their hands or fingers, every year, in the accidents in the automobile supply chain, just in Gurgaon-Manesar. They are mostly very young migrant contract workers, who are given little training or safety equipment, before they are assigned to high risk and high pressure machine jobs in smaller factories supplying to large car and two-wheeler brands, that are house-hold names in India.
To add to their misery, they get little support from their factory owners and management, and even when they are meant to be covered by Employee State Insurance (ESI), they do not get the required health-care and compensation after the accident. Many of them return to their villages having lost their fight with the inefficient and unsupportive system.
